Scam Alert
9/1/2011

Legitimate sales happen every day on the Great Old Cars web site as well as other Classified Ad sites. Unfortunately there are SCAM artists that travel all the sites hoping to find an unsuspecting seller or buyer. These are the same people with the same SCAMs that you may find locally when advertising in your local classifieds. The internet is a new market opportunity for them. The good news is that these people are very easy to distinguish. You just need to be wise to their schemes.

Important: Your email is not visible in your ad. Response to your ad is with a secure form. Once you respond back, the person that emails you now has your email address. So choose your email response wisely. Never respond to obvious scams or questionable emails.

Sellers Beware: No legitimate company or person will offer to pay by arranging to send you a check and asking you to send money to someone. If you receive this offer, it is a scam! They do not want your car. They want your money. Early Scam identification may include one or more of the following:

  • Email requests that refer to your car as "advertisement", "vehicle", "item" or other generic non specific term
  • Poor spelling and/or grammar
  • Questions that are already answered in your ad
  • Long explanations about payment method. Buyer may offer to send more money if you promise to send the balance to someone else for services or other reason
  • Explanations on why they are out of the country: military, oil tanker workers, vacations, world travel, busy executives, etc, etc

Buyers Beware: Scammers have begun advertising very high-end cars on many web sites with an asking price that is to good to be true.
PLEASE be very cautious with ads which:
1. Come from overseas.
2. Have an asking price that seems to good to be true.
3. Request a deposit be sent immediately.
4. Express a sense of urgency in making the transaction.

Note: We constantly monitor Great Old Cars and cancel ads that meet the above criteria but sometimes ads slip through our review. If you find an ad of this type please email us immediately

Always Remember: If it is to good to be true, it pobably is!
