1955
was Chevrolet’s major introduction of
an all new vehicle line. In 1955 Chevrolet
went from the basic family car with a non
performance six cylinder engine to a new style
that would set the standard of the automotive
industry for years to come. The hot new optional
265 Cubic Inch V8 had the performance that
the youth market demanded. The sales brochure
summed it up best: “Show Car Styling
at its Beautiful Best”. The new look
with the V8 engine was the most changed Chevy
since World War II and the most exciting car
to wear the bow-tie emblem.
1955 was a record year for Detroit car
sales (7.1 million) and Chevrolet produced
1.7 million or 24 percent. This was a record
number for any automaker of the times.
